Bowling turned out to be nothing like the gentle game Iâd seen in the films. As we went into an enormous building, we were hit by a wall of noise â music, shouting, laughing and crashing sounds. It was overwhelming â Iâd never seen or even imagined anything like it â and I guess it must have shown on my face as Fred frowned and asked, âYou OK? You want to go somewhere else? We could go to that hotel after all? Nice and quiet there â¦â
I shook my head and forced a smile. âNo. No, this is great. Thank you.â
He sighed and shrugged.
âOK, youâre the boss tonight,â he said and then, âTwo, pleaseâ to the boy behind the counter as he handed over some money. I blushed, wanting to offer to pay my share but not having any money.
âIâm sorry I donât have any â¦â I began but he waved his hand at me.
âItâs fine. My treat. Just got paid, like I said. What size are you?â
âPardon?â I looked down at my clothes and blushed again. âUmm, I think about a 14?â Dad always bought my clothes for me but that was what the labels said on them. Usually they came in plastic bags when heâd been to the supermarket.
He laughed. âShoe size.â
âOh!â I exclaimed, wondering why he wanted to know. âFour, then.â
The man behind the counter handed over a pair of blue and red shoes which Fred handed to me. âHere you go.â
âOh, OK thanks.â I tried but clearly failed to look like I wasnât a little taken aback by this; and Fred looked at me quizzically.
âYou have been bowling before, havenât you?â
I blushed again. âUm ⦠no, not really,â I said. âItâs not Dadâs kind of ⦠well.â I trailed off. It was too embarrassing to say that I literally never went anywhere. Iâd never explicitly stated that to Fred â Iâd simply said that Dad was very protective and wouldnât let me out on my own with a boy.
I was more and more beginning to doubt what Dad had told me about lots of girls my age living the way I do. Unless Fred just didnât know about any of them, which then again, I guess he wouldnât if they were at home all the time like me.
It was so confusing.
I looked around at the clothes the other girls were wearing â some of them were in skirts shorter than Iâd ever seen in the films we watched and tops that almost showed their boobs. Both girls and boys had rips in their trousers and they wore all the colours of the rainbow. There were people with pierced noses and strangely coloured hair. Rows of earrings. Blue nail varnish. So many things I hadnât seen before, obviously not in real life, as I never saw anyone except Dad, who always wore pretty much the same thing every day, but I hadnât seen anything like it in the films either.
The music and shouts were incredibly loud and the lights were so bright and there were loads of unfamiliar smells too.
